So you’re after a free responsive WordPress theme with a slider? Don’t ask for much, do you?!

What follow are fifteen quality examples of such themes; our pick of the best.

1. Adapt

Adapt by WPExplorer is a premium-like free theme (a freemium theme, if you like) with a responsive home page slider. The theme would suit someone looking to create a portfolio or business website.

Since you’re reading this post (and not just skim reading, I hope), I’m going to assume that you dig sliders. Not just home page sliders. Which is good, because Adapt allows you to use sliders on single post, like so:

Adapt post slider

How cool is that?! For a free theme, that’s pretty neat, no?

Adapt also comes with a load of shortcodes for coloured boxes, text highlights, buttons and columns.

It also features a couple of page templates, full width and landing page, a blog page and a widgetised footer (into which you can easily add tags, recent posts, search, etc.).

Theme Features

  • responsive layout
  • home page slider
  • portfolio slider on single posts
  • full width and landing page templates
  • blog page
  • widgetised sidebar and footer

Impressed by Adapt? You can check out WPExplorer’s premium work on ThemeForest.

2. Oxygen

Oxygen- Magazine WordPress Theme

Oxygen is a clean magazine theme built on the Hybrid Core framework. Most importantly of all, for the purposes of this post, it features a home page slider.

I’m a big fan of the general layout: sidebar, content, sidebar. It’s not a layout you see too often these days, but it looks great in the demo.

If you like widgets (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t?) you’ll like Oxygen. It’s because of them that you can easily add calendar, search, tag and text widgets to your sidebars and footer.

Theme Features

  • responsive design
  • home page slider
  • 5 widget areas
  • lightbox gallery

3. Respo

Respo theme - Just awesome responsive WordPress theme!

Oh Respo, how I admire the aesthetics and functionality of thee. For personal blogs and magazines particularly, Respo is a wise choice.

Slider-wise, what Respo has to offer is a FlexSlider powered by jQuery. And very nice it is too.

Free themes with shortcodes are always a nice surprise. Respo comes with shortcodes for buttons, columns, and even icons (and more).

Theme Features

  • responsive design
  • responsive slider
  • full width page template
  • shortcodes
  • sidebar tabs (latest/popular/random posts, tags)

14. Customizr

15. Expressions

Expressions is a simple theme, but also a pleasant looking one. The theme is flexible, and with a little customisation could be utilised for a wide range of purposes.

Those were fifteen smashing free themes to meet your slider needs. Wondering which one to pick? Well, they’re all good, so don’t worry too much about deciding. Trust your gut and go with what what you feel would work best for your site. Personally, we have a bit of a soft spot for the clever and slightly unorthodox design of Oxygen, but that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily right for you (it is primarily for magazines, remember). We also adore Respo. Which is your favourite? Let us know in the comments if you’re not too busy!
